Writer and expert

Since Neal’s Yard Remedies was founded in 1981, we’ve been championing sustainability. During every step of our journey, we’ve made conscious efforts to do things ethically and naturally, creating sustainable beauty products in an attempt to protect the environment.

From developing the first Soil Association organic beauty products, to marking our 10th anniversary of becoming the world’s first CarbonNeutral® high street retailer, we continue to pioneer ways of supporting people and our beautiful planet. And we have no plans to slow down.

Over the years, we’ve learned that everyone from the big corporations to smaller businesses and individuals all have a part to play in protecting the environment. If we can all find small ways to adjust our lifestyles, together we can have a big impact. Here are some of our top tips for a more sustainable life.

Tips for more sustainable living

Refill your products

Refilling your favourite beauty products is a great way to cut down on excessive packaging. At Neal’s Yard Remedies, we offer refills on many of our products, so you can simply top up your favourite shower gel or handwash when it’s running low.

We have 950ml refill bottles for several products in our bath and shower range, which uses 60% less plastic than buying the equivalent in 200ml bottles. We also have refills available for our reed diffusers, shampoos, hand washes and lotions as well as a selection of empty bottles and pumps for you to fill with your favourite refill products.

Recycle and reuse

We all know how important it is to recycle – whether we’re collecting our empty wine bottles to take to the glass bank or popping our tins and paper scraps in the green wheelie bin.

Did you know you can head to any of our stores to recycle your used Neal’s Yard Remedies products? Just pop in with your clean and dry packaging and we’ll take care of your recycling for you.

Eat more organic whole foods

Consuming more organic plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds isn’t just good for your health – it’s also good for the planet.

It’s widely recognised that these foods have lower carbon footprints than animal products and processed foods, so you’ll be doing yourself and the environment a favour by adding more plants to your diet.

Support the bees

With over half of UK bee species having declined in the past 50 years and 97% of wildflower meadows having disappeared since the 1930s, it’s never been more important to support our vital bees.

At Neal’s Yard Remedies, we’re proud to support bee-friendly organisations with sales of our nourishing and uplifting Bee Lovely range. You can also help to protect bees by planting wildflowers in your gardens and supporting local beekeepers.
